Pre-Prep

Welcome to Haybrook!

St Francis Pre-Prep, also fondly referred to as Haybrook, consists of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. It is led by Ms Nadine Finlay, who joined St Francis in 2022, alongside Mrs Ashman and Miss Lawton.

Our learning journey begins with the curiosities and passions of our children. Learning from enthused staff and enriching activities, we aspire to provide a setting where the children feel inspired and have a love of learning. Our holistic curriculum has been developed with the child at the heard, focusing on enrichment and infiltrating this with a rich text reading spine. Across our 18 acres, and further afield into the beautiful Wiltshire countryside that surround us, the children are encouraged to follow their passions, enjoy new opportunities, all the while embodying our school values of Teamwork and Kindness.

Haybrook children benefit from the schools wider facilities including the astroturf, Nature school in the forest, lessons in the Science lab and regular swimming lessons.

Our Day At A Glance

We are fortunate to maintain small, single form classes, which helps the children to maximise their childhood experiences with a broad and balanced curriculum. Themed days occur at different times throughout the year allowing the children to develop their CLICK skills of Collaborating and Leadership.

Haybrook gas a personal library, French room, music room and computer room, along with a garden area and woodland. During weekly Nature School and Eco club sessions, the children are creating their very own passion project of an Eco garden.

Fortnightly Open Lessons enable family members to join the classes and learn strategies for both Phonics and Maths which are not only age appropriate and at the forefront of educational thinking, but also provide a fun opportunity for the children to share their knowledge with loved ones.

We have a fantastic catering team and the children enjoy a home cooked mean every day. Year 2 also have the opportunity to choose from the salad bar. We find that by staff and children eating together it recreates a family meal time, reinforcing the skills needed at this time, such as using a knife and fork correctly, sharing condiments and turn taking within a conversation.

All children are encouraged to read every day, both at school and at home. Each of the classrooms have a book corner, that are used alongside the library and reading room. Alongside our English focus rich text we also support other areas of learning with books and every day concludes with a fantastic story. At the end of each term our reading lists are sent home to families, so as to share what has been enjoyed in class. Year 2 also send home regular book reviews of the early chapter books they’ve read, as a way of helping the children develop a love of reading, as well as know that their thoughts and opinions are important.

Meet the Team

Mrs Finlay

I was brought up by a family of teachers, in Essex, and spent every weekend and holiday camping or sailing. My passion for travelling and adventure caused me to lead an expedition to Central America in my late teens where I was involved in mapping the rainforest in Belize and Guatemala, and working in a Mexican orphanage. At 24 I sailed the English channel single handedly. Since having my own children, I find that they have inherited my passion for adventure through involvement with the Scouts and Guides movement, along with our own pursuits in nature. This has undeniably infiltrated into my work ethos, ensuring the children of Haybrook have a wide and enriching curriculum. I originally trained as an international teacher, spending time in both Florida and London as an Early Years Child Development Specialist. My second degree in education focused on the Primary ages, and my masters looked at language acquisition from conception to 8. Having written for national teaching publications, such as the TES and Nexus, I my work on language acquisition was also recognised nationally by the National Literacy Awards in 2020 and again in 2021, where I won the National Curriculum Improvement award.
