Year 5 Explore the Science Behind Flowers
Last week, Year 5 pupils had fun with their Science investigation - an exciting hands-on activity—dissecting a lily to examine its key structures. Working in small groups, they carefully took apart the flowers, identifying and labelling the different parts, from the petals and stamens to the pistil and ovary.
The lesson was designed to deepen their understanding of plant reproduction and pollination, helping them see first-hand how flowers play a crucial role in the life cycle of plants. By closely observing the anthers, filaments, stigma, and style, they could connect their classroom learning to real-world biology, fostering curiosity and engagement with the subject.
One pupil remarked, "It was amazing to see how all the parts fit together. I never realised how complex flowers are!"
Hands-on investigations like these bring Science to life, encouraging pupils to think critically, ask questions, and explore the natural world in greater depth. A fantastic way to show Science in action!
